DAY1: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH
Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive to your hotel in the “Garden City”. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city on your own with rental vehicle..
DAY2: CHRISTCHURCH / OAMARU / DUNEDIN
Self drive from Christchurch to Dunedin today traveling south across the Canterbury Plains to Timaru via the farming servicing centre of Ashburton, and continue south following the east coast. Cross the Waitaki River and pass through the historic town of Oamaru and then on to Dunedin via Palmerston and Waikouiti. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or to explore this "Student City" on your own.
DAY 3: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER
This morning you will enjoy a self drive ½ day city sightseeing tour including the First Church, the Octagon, Dunedin Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Town Belt, and the University of Otago. In the afternoon, you can drive out along the scenic Otago Peninsula following the harbour edge to the Royal Albatross Colony. Later visit Natures Wonder to see the Yellow Eyed Penguins and then visit the grounds of Larnach Castle, built by William Larnach in the nineteenth century and the only castle in New Zealand. Return to your hotel in the late afternoon. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore this lively student city.
DAY 4: DUNEDIN / TE ANAU
Self drive from Dunedin to Te Anau this morning. Travel south via the towns of Milton, Balclutha, Gore and Lumsden before crossing the Southland Plains to Te Anau on the shores of Lake Te Anau, and the gateway to the Fiordland National Park. Rest of the day at leisure to relax or perhaps this evening you may like to take an Optional tour to the Te Anau Caves. (Not included)
DAY 5: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWNL
Full day self drive excursion to Milford Sound with cruise. Drive alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. View waterfalls, seals, dolphins, and maybe some penguins. Drive back to Queenstown via same scenic route.
DAY 6: QUEENSTOWN
Free day at leisure with self drive rental vehicle and an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola ride up Bob's Peak, TSS Earnslaw cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Sheep Station, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. (Please note the above Options are not included in the tour costs)
DAY 7: QUEENSTOWN / MOUNT COOK / CHRISTCHURCH
Depart Queenstown and self drive from Queenstown to Dunedin via the Kawarau Gorge and fruit growing area around Cromwell. Cross Lake Dunstan and follow the Clutha River through Central Otago and pass through the towns of Alexandra, Roxburgh and Lawrence to arrive in the Scottish influenced city of Dunedin. This afternoon enjoy a self drive ½ day sightseeing tour along with Otago Peninsula with visits to the Albatross Colony, Natures Wonders with the Yellow Eyed Penguins, and the grounds of Larnach Castle, built by William Larnach in the nineteenth century and the only castle in N.Z. Check in to your hotel and relax at leisure.
DAY 8: CHRISTCHURCH / KAIKOURA
Self drive to Kaikoura this morning. Depart Christchurch and travel north through the sheep farming district of North Canterbury and follow the spectacular Kaikoura Coast to Kaikoura – famous for its whalewatching. Here you will enjoy a Whalewatch excursion and observe these huge mammals at close quarters from the safety of your cruise vessel. Drive to your hotel afterwards and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax and explore on your own. Kaikoura is well known for its many seafood restaurants and the local delicacy of fresh crayfish.
DAY 9: KAIKOURA / PICTON / WELLINGTON
Depart Kaikoura for Wellington this morning. Travel north along the Kaikoura Coast by self drive via Blenheim in the heart of the wine growing region of Marlborough, famous for the Savignon Blanc and Chardonnay wines that are grown here and on to the town of Picton. Drop-off rental vehicle on arrival at the Picton Ferry Terminal and board the Inter-Islander Ferry to the North Island. Enjoy the scenic beauty of the Queen Charlotte Sound as you cruise in the Marlborough Sounds and cross the Cook Strait and enter the natural harbour of the Capital City of Wellington. Pick-up another self drive rental vehicle on arrival and drive to the hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own.
DAY 10: WELLINGTON / TAUPO / ROTORUA
Depart Wellington and travel north along the west coast of the North Island by self drive rental car before heading inland and climbing up and onto the Central Volcanic Plateau and passing alongside the Tongariro National Park, home to two of New Zealand’s active volcanoes, Mounts Ngauruhoe and Ruapehu. Follow the eastern shoreline of Lake Taupo, the largest lake in New Zealand and formed in an extinct volcanic crater the size of the Republic of Singapore, to arrive at Taupo at the northern end. Continue on following the Waikato River via the spectacular Huka Falls and the Wairakei Geothermal Valley and travel through the exotic man-made pinus radiata forests of the Kaiangaroa before arriving at the “Thermal Spa Resort” of Rotorua in the late afternoon. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax. This evening enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi and Concert at your hotel.
DAY 11:ROTORUA
Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers. Also visit the Paradise Valley Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. The afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a visit to the Polynesian Pools or to explore the Rotorua and Bay of Plenty region on your own. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.)
DAY 12:ROTORUA / WAITOMO CAVES / AUCKLAND
This morning after breakfast at the hotel, check out and self drive to Christchurch traveling through the Kawarau Gorge once more and the fruit growing area around Cromwell and across Lake Dunstan and through Central Otago to the Lindis Pass and up into the MacKenzie High Country. Continue through the settlement of Omarama and on to Lake Tekapo. Descend Burkes Pass to Fairlie and through rolling hill country to Geraldine and across the straight, flat roads of the Canterbury Plains to "Garden City" of Christchurch.
DAY 13:AUCKLAND
Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of the city including the Westhaven Yacht Marina, Parnell Village, Auckland Domain, and the volcanic crater of Mt Eden from the top of which you will get panoramic views across the sprawling "City of Sails" in all directions. This afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a harbour cruise, a visit to the Sky Tower, a ferry to the Victorian era suburb of Devonport with it many cafes, restaurants, and art & craft shops. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in tour costs.) Or for you to explore the many attractions, parks and beaches that abound in the Auckland region.
DAY 13: DEPART AUCKLAND
Your arrangements conclude with a departure transfer by SIC to Auckland Airport. We trust that you have enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
