Depart Christchurch and self drive to Dunedin today traveling across the Canterbury Plains to Geraldine and over rolling hill country to Fairlie. Climb up through the Burke’s Pass to the MacKenzie High Country. Stop at the “Church of the Good Shepherd” on the shores of Lake Tekapo before following Lake Pukaki to the highest mountain in New Zealand – Mt Cook. There will be time here for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier subject to the weather on the day. (NB: Optional scenic flight is not included in the tour costs.) Continue via Twizel and Omarama and follow the Waitaki River to Oamaru on the coast and then on south to Dunedin via Palmerston and Wakouiti. Arrive in the Edinburgh of the south and the rest of the day is at leisure.
Today you will enjoy local city sightseeing by self drive rental car and view popular buildings with classic Gothic architecture such as the First Church, Dunedin Railway Station, Otago Boys High School, Dunedin Cathedral, University of Otago, also visit the Botanical Gardens, Town Belt, and Octagon. In the afternoon drive out along the Otago Peninsula following the harbours edge to the Royal Albatross Colony. Later visit Natures Wonders to see the Yellow Eyed penguins and then visit the grounds of Larnach Castle, built by William Larnach in the nineteenth century and the only castle in New Zealand. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore this lively student city with its scottish heritage.
Full day excursion to Milford Sound. Drive alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls.View waterfalls, dolphins, seals and perhaps a penguin. Return to Queenstown in the late afternoon via the same route.

Enjoy breakfast at your hotel this morning. Transfer to the Stewart Island Wharf and return to Invercargill via the ferry to Bluff and self drive to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore the southern most city in the world with its very wide main streets.
Check out of your hotel after breakfast and self drive from Invercargill to Te Anau by rental car via the Southland Plains. Te Anau is a small town set on the picturesque shores of Lake Te Anau and is the gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own. This evening you will enjoy a tour to the Te Anau Glow worm caves with a cruise on Lake Te Anau.
Full day excursion to Doubtful Sound. Check out of hotel after breakfast and drive from Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Park to Manapouri where you will board your launch for the trip across Lake Manapouri. Here you will board your coach and take a ride deep inside the granite rock to the main turbine room of the Manapouri Power Station. It was quite some engineering feat in its construction. Climb over the Wilmott Pass and descend into Deep Cove at Doubtful Sound. Board another launch for a cruise out to the Tasman Sea and back, passing through pristine wilderness. You may see dolphins, seals and penguins today as you cruise through this unspoilt natural ecosystem. Afterwards, return to Manapouri and self drive to Queenstown by rental car via the Southland Plains and arrive in the late afternoon.

This morning after breakfast at the hotel, check out and self drive to Christchurch traveling through the Kawarau Gorge once more and the fruit growing area around Cromwell and across Lake Dunstan and through Central Otago to the Lindis Pass and up into the MacKenzie High Country. Continue through the settlement of Omarama and on to Lake Tekapo. Descend Burkes Pass to Fairlie and through rolling hill country to Geraldine and across the straight, flat roads of the Canterbury Plains to "Garden City" of Christchurch.
