DAY1: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH
Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive to your hotel in the “Garden City”. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city on your own with rental vehicle..
DAY2: CHRISTCHURCH / ARTHUR'S PASS / FRANZ JOSEF
Check out of the hotel after breakfast and self drive from Christchurch across the Southern Alps via Arthur's Pass to Greymouth. This afternoon you can drive south to Franz Josef Glacier. Drive through the small settlements of Hokitika, Ross and Harihari, and several beautiful lakes surrounded by native bush en route. Arrive at Franz Josef Glacier and check in to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or perhaps explore the village and take a walk to visit the nearby Westland National Park Visitors Information Centre, or drive up to the end of the glacier road and view the glacier or walk closer for a better view.
DAY 3: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER
This morning you will be taken on a ½ day guided glacier walk up onto the ice of the Franz Josef Glacier accompanied by experienced Alpine Guides who will explain the local flora and fauna as well as the geology of the glacier. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore on your own or perhaps take an Optional scenic helicopter flight over the glacier. (Please note that the Optional scenic flight is not included in the tour costs.)
DAY 4: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER / QUEENSTOWN
Depart Franz Josef Glacier and self drive to Queenstown this morning traveling through the small settlements of Fox Glacier and Haast at the mouth of the Haast River before following the river upstream to the “Gates of Haast” and over the scenic bushclad Haast Pass, the southern most route across the main divide. Continue through the small settlement of Makarora, opposite the Mount Aspiring National Park, and along the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea before passing through the fruit growing area around Cromwell and on through the rugged Kawarau Gorge to beautiful Queenstown set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu .
DAY 5: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN
Full day excursion to Milford Sound. Drive alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls.View waterfalls, dolphins, seals and perhaps a penguin. Return to Queenstown in the late afternoon via the same route.
DAY 6: QUEENSTOWN
Free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own with self drive rental car or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola ride up Bob's Peak, TSS Earnslaw Cruise across Lake Wakatipu to Walter Peak Sheep Station, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy your time in Queenstown - the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. (Please note the above Options are not included in the tour costs)
DAY 7: QUEENSTOWN / ROTORUA
Drive to Queenstown Airport by self drive rental car and drop-off rental car before boarding your aircraft and flying to Rotorua. Pick-up another rental car on arrival at Rotorua Airport and drive to your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure for exploring the "Spa City" on your own or relaxing. This evening enjoy a traditional Maori Hangi & Concert.
DAY 8: ROTORUA
Enjoy a self drive ½ day morning sightseeing tour of some of the highlights of Rotorua including a visit to Te Puia Thermal Reserve to see boiling mudpools and geysers, and to learn about Maori culture. Also visit the Paradise Valley Springs to see New Zealand trout, birds and wildlife before continuing on to the Agrodome where you will watch a New Zealand Farm show featuring sheep dog demonstrations, cow milking and learn about the New Zealand sheep farming industry and the different breeds of sheep. The afternoon is at leisure for Optional activities such as a visit to the Polynesian Pools, or exploring on your own. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.)
DAY 9: ROTORUA / WAITOMO CAVES / AUCKLAND
After breakfast at your hotel, depart Rotorua and self drive to Auckland via the world famous Waitomo Caves. Drive over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges and through the lush green dairy farming region of the Waikato and arrive at Waitomo. Take a guided tour through the caves and continue on to Auckland, following the Waikato River for part of the way. Arrive at Auckland, the "City of Sails" in the late afternoon and check-in to your hotel. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city on your own with the rental car.
DAY 10: DEPART CHRISTCHURCH
Your arrangements conclude today with the drop off of your rental car at Christchurch International Airport prior to boarding your departure flight. Bon Voyage! We trust that you have enjoyed your New Zealand holiday with Adventure Pacific.
