DAY1: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH

Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive to your hotel in the “Garden City”. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city on your own with rental vehicle..

DAY2: CHRISTCHURCH / GREYMOUTH / FRANZ JOSEF

Check out of your hotel this morning and self drive across the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass to the West Coast. Drive south to Franz Josef Glacier. Pass through the small settlements of Hokitika, Ross and Harihari en route as well as a number of pristine lakes surrounded by native bush. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the town.

DAY 3: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER

This morning you will be taken on a ½ day guided glacier walk along the glaciated valley and onto the ice of the Franz Josef Glacier accompanied by experienced Alpine Guides who will explain the local flora and fauna as well as the geology of the glacier. Allow 4.5 hours for this excursion. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore on your own or visit the Westland Visitors Centre, or perhaps take an Optional scenic helicopter flight over the glacier. (Please note that Optional activities are not included in the tour costs.)

DAY 4: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER / QUEENSTOWN

Check out of your hotel this morning and self drive to Queenstown traveling through the small settlements of Fox Glacier and Haast at the mouth of the Haast River before following the river upstream to the “Gates of Haast” and over the scenic bushclad Haast Pass, the southern most route across the main divide. Travel past the settlement of Makarora opposite the Mount Aspiring National Park and along the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea before passing through the fruit growing area around Cromwell and through the Kawarau Gorge to Queenstown set on the shores of picturesque Lake Wakatipu.

DAY 5: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN

Full day self drive excursion to Milford Sound. Travel alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with a steep 1:10 gradiant and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak & the Bowen Falls. Return to Queenstown in the early evening and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax & enjoy.

DAY 6: DEPART QUEENSTOWN

Check out of your hotel and this morning is at leisure until it is time to self drive to Queenstown Airport and drop-off the rental car before boarding your departure flight. There may be an opportunity for some last minute shopping or time to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola rides, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy your last day in the very picturesque Queenstown, the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. [Please note that above Options are not included in the tour costs].
