Christchurch - Dunedin - Te Anau - Queenstown - Milford Sound - Mount Cook - Greymouth

DAY1: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH

Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive to your hotel in the “Garden City”. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city on your own with rental vehicle..

DAY2: CHRISTCHURCH / MOUNT COOK / DUNEDIN

Drive to Dunedin today traveling across the Canterbury Plains to Geraldine and over rolling hill country to Fairlie. Climb up through the Burke’s Pass to the MacKenzie High Country. Stop at the “Church of the Good Shepherd” on the shores of Lake Tekapo before following Lake Pukaki to the highest mountain in New Zealand – Mt Cook. There is time here for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier, subject to the weather conditions on the day. (NB: Scenic flight is Optional and not included in the tour costs.)Continue via Twizel and Omarama and follow the Waitaki River to Oamaru and then on south to Dunedin via Palmerston and Wakouiti. Rest of the day is at leisure.

DAY 3: DUNEDIN

This morning you will enjoy a self drive city sightseeing tour including the First Church, the Octagon, Dunedin Cathedral, Botanical Gardens, Town Belt, and the University of Otago. In the afternoon take a drive out along the Otago Peninsula following the harbour edge to the Royal Albatross Colony Visitors Centre. Later visit Natures Wonders to see the Yellow Eyed penguins and then visit Larnach Castle & grounds, built by William Larnach in the nineteenth century and the only castle in New Zealand. Rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore this lively student city.

DAY 4: DUNEDIN / TE ANAU

Drive from Dunedin to Te Anau by self drive rental car. Travel south via the towns of Milton, Balclutha, Gore and Lumsden before crossing the Southland Plains to Te Anau on the shores of the lake, and the gateway to the Fiordland National Park. Rest of the day at leisure to relax. Perhaps an Optional visit to Te Anau Caves this evening.

DAY 5: TE ANAU / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN

Full day excursion to Milford Sound by self drive rental car. Depart from Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park and pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. Drive to Queenstown via Te Anau and arrive in the late afternoon at your hotel. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax and enjoy.

DAY 6: QUEENSTOWN

Free day at leisure with an opportunity to explore on your own or to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola ride to Bob's Peak, TSS Earnslaw cruise across Lake Wakatipu to the Walter Peak Sheep Station, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy Queenstown the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. (Please note that Optional activities above are not included in tour cost.)

DAY 7: QUEENSTOWN / FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER

Drive to Franz Josef Glacier this morning traveling through the Kawarau Gorge once more and the fruit growing area around Cromwell and through Central Otago to Lakes Hawea and Wanaka past the small settlement of Makarora opposite the Mount Aspiring National Park, and climb over the bushclad Haast Pass to the West Coast. Follow the Haast River to the township of Haast at the mouth of the river and head north following the coast to Knights Point and past scenic lakes and on to Fox Glacier then Franz Josef Glacier.

DAY 8: FRANZ JOSEF / GREYMOUTH / CHRISTCHURCH

Drive to Christchurch this morning via the small townships of Harihari, Ross and Hokitika to arrive at Greymouth for lunch. Depart for Christchurch in the afternoon and drive across the Southern Alps mountain range via a scenic route through the Arthur’s Pass to Christchurch. Check in to your hotel. Rest of day at leisure for you to relax and enjoy your last night here.

DAY 9: DEPART CHRISTCHURCH

Check out of your hotel and this morning is at leisure until it is time to self drive to Queenstown Airport and drop-off the rental car before boarding your departure flight. There may be an opportunity for some last minute shopping or time to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola rides, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy your last day in the very picturesque Queenstown, the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. [Please note that above Options are not included in the tour costs].
