DAY1: ARRIVE CHRISTCHURCH
Pick-up self drive rental vehicle on arrival at Christchurch International Airport. Self drive to your hotel in the “Garden City”. The rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore the city on your own with rental vehicle..
DAY2: CHRISTCHURCH / GREYMOUTH
Check out of the hotel after breakfast and self drive from Christchurch across the Southern Alps via Arthur’s Pass to Greymouth. This afternoon you can drive north along the West Coast to Punakaiki to see the “Pancake Rocks” and Blow Holes which are especially spectacular at high tide. Return to Greymouth later in the afternoon and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or go for a walk around this small town built on the banks of the Grey River with its notorius sand bar at the entrance which has claimed many ships over the years, especially sailing ships in the 19th century, & recently coastal ships transporting coal.
DAY 3: GREYMOUTH / FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER
Check-out of your hotel after breakfast and self drive to Franz Josef Glacier. There are many places of interest along the way such as Shantytown, and Hokitika with its Jade Factory, and Ross with its museum. Travel south through Harihari, and passing several scenic lakes surrounded by native bush en route before arriving at Franz Josef Glacier itself. Check in to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax or explore on your own.
DAY 4: FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER
This morning you will be taken on a ½ day guided glacier walk up onto the ice of the Franz Josef Glacier accompanied by experienced Alpine Guides who will explain the local flora and fauna as well as the geology of the glacier. The rest of the day is at leisure to explore on your own or perhaps take an Optional scenic helicopter flight over the glacier subject to the weather conditions on the day.(Please note that the Optional activities above are not included in tour cost.)
DAY 5: QUEENSTOWN /FRANZ JOSEF GLACIER
Check out of your hotel after breakfast this morning and self drive South to Queenstown traveling through the small settlements of Fox Glacier and Haast at the mouth of the Haast River before following the river upstream to the “Gates of Haast” and over the scenic bush clad Haast Pass, the southern most route across the main divide. Drive past the small settlement of Makaroroa, opposite the Mount Aspiring National Park, and along the shores of Lakes Wanaka and Hawea before passing through the fruitgrowing area around Cromwell and through the Kawarau Gorge to picturesque Queenstown set on the shores of Lake Wakatipu. Check in to your hotel and the rest of the day is at leisure to relax & explore.
DAY 6: QUEENSTOWN / MILFORD SOUND / QUEENSTOWN
Full day self drive excursion to Milford Sound. Travel alongside the shores of Lake Wakatipu beneath the towering Remarkables mountain range and across the flat Southland Plains to Te Anau, gateway to the Fiordland National Park, now proclaimed a World Heritage Park. Pass through Beech forests, glaciated valleys, the Homer Tunnel with its 1:10 gradient, and stunning scenery to reach the majestic Milford Sound. Enjoy a cruise on this world famous fiord which is dominated by Mitre Peak and the Bowen Falls. See waterfalls, seals, dolphins & perhaps some penguins. Drive back to Queenstown arriving at hotel in the late afternoon.
DAY 7: QUEENSTOWN / MOUNT COOK / CHRISTCHURCH
Check-out of your hotel after breakfast and drive through the Kawarau Gorge to the fruitgrowing region of Cromwell and across Lake Dunstan, through barren Central Otago to the Lindis Pass and into the MacKenzie High Country and on to New Zealand’s highest mountain – Mount Cook. Here there will be time for an Optional scenic flight over the Southern Alps with a snow landing on the Tasman Glacier, subject to the weather on the day. (Please note Optional scenic flight not included in tour cost.) Depart Mount Cook and follow the shores of Lake Pukaki and the canals of the Upper Waitaki Hydro-electric power scheme, past Mt John and on to Lake Tekapo and the “Church of the Good Shepherd” before descending Burkes Pass and driving across the long flat straights of the Canterbury Plains to arrive at the “Garden City” of Christchurch. The rest of the day is at leisure.
DAY 8: DEPART CHRISTCHURCH
Check out of your hotel and this morning is at leisure until it is time to self drive to Queenstown Airport and drop-off the rental car before boarding your departure flight. There may be an opportunity for some last minute shopping or time to experience some of the many Optional activities available here such as jetboating, bungy jumping, whitewater rafting, gondola rides, 4WD safaris and many more options. Enjoy your last day in the very picturesque Queenstown, the Adventure Capital of New Zealand. [Please note that above Options are not included in the tour costs].
