Depart Auckland this morning and drive south along the motorway to the Bombay Hills, en route from Auckland to Rotorua. Descend into the lush, green dairy farming region of the Waikato Province and travel via the city of Hamilton. Continue on to Rotorua through the prosperous town of Cambridge, well known for the many thoroughbred horse studs in the area which have produced some of the top horses.
Follow the Waikato River for part of the way and then climb over the bushclad Mamaku Ranges to arrive at the “Thermal Spa City” of Rotorua, set on the shores of Lake Rotorua. Check in to hotel.The rest of the day at leisure to relax or go for an Optional soak in thermal waters of the Polynesian Spa. Depart Rotorua this morning and return to Auckland via the Waitomo Caves. Travel once more over the bushclad hills of the Mamaku Ranges and descend into the Waikato Province. Continue on to the Waitomo Caves via Cambridge and Otorohanga. Enjoy a guided tour through the world famous Waitomo Glow worm caves and view staligtites, staligmites, and millions of tiny glow worms on the cavern roof as you drift silently through the underground grotto by boat.
Continue on to Auckland passing through the lush green dairy farming areas of the Waikato Province, following the Waikato River, N.Z.'s longest, to arrive back in the "City of Sails" in the late afternoon. Check in to your hotel and relax, or perhaps take a walk around the central city area and do some last minute shopping.
